ScummVM 2.8.1 is the first release of the year for the adventurers’ VM
Exactly three months after the release of the previous version, the ScummVM team has now released a new update for adventurers’ (and role players’) favorite virtual machine. ScummVM 2.8.1 actually is a maintenance release, a minor update designed to fix bugs that emerged since the last stable version of the program. Starting with enabling the engine for the games of the Might and Magic series (MM), which had already been added but disabled at compile time.
ScummVM 2.8.1 includes updates and improvements for several engines, including the aforementioned MM, AGI, AGS, Ultima, TWINE, V-Cruise, and others. Unlike what usually happens, the changes for the SCUMM engine are this time limited to a couple of fixes for the Mac versions of Loom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The AGI engine (originally developed by Sierra for King’s Quest) is the technology affected by the highest number of bugfixes, followed by open source engine AGS and the one used for Ultima VIII. ScummVM 2.8.1 also includes a couple of global fixes affecting OpenGL ES2 platforms and OpenGL rendering.
The developers point out that ports for Android, Atari and macOS have received several bugfixes, making ScummVM 2.8.1 a more stable and less crash-prone gaming VM on the aforementioned platforms. ScummVM is available for download on an unbelievable number of devices and operating systems as usual, and a small selection of freeware games and free addons which carry no risk of copyright infringement is also available. I’m still waiting for the addition of a playable version of KULT: The Temple of Flying Saucers, a rather odd title that somewhat influenced my gaming childhood and which I will necessarily have to write about again in the future.
