X-Setup Pro shut down
The month of June started with a bad news for all the Windows systems power users and personalizations fans: X-Setup Pro, a long-history tweaking software with unique features, reached the end of its lifetime. Because of its financial problems, the company behind X-Setup interrupted the program’s development giving away the latest version with a serial code useful for its registration.
X-Setup is a tweaking application which gives an easy and prompt access to more than 2,000 settings that are normally hidden inside the configuration files. The access to settings scattered across many different places within the Windows GUI takes place from the same centralized interface, and the authors’ drive for completeness is fulfilled by the possibility to launch, from that very interface, many tools and utility, management and editing software available in Windows (System Restore, Regedit, DirectX and memory diagnostics, Task Manager, Control Panel and much more).
Besides this, the X-Setup-driven tweaking has always been far superior than competitors for many good reasons: the software is able to work and operate in almost any Windows version released until now (from Windows 95 to Windows 7), offers the chance to reach the single tweaks both by the classic interface and through a complete search functionality, is compatible with bootable CDs built with BartPE, has a security feature useful to prevent fortuitous changes of sensitive system settings, can record all the changes in a .reg file to export them on other installations and restore the original settings thanks to the Restore Log feature.
And last but not least, X-Setup Pro is completely based on a plug-in design thanks to which users have been able to contribute with specific tweaks to further enrich the software capabilities. So how it was possible that a community-driven tool like X-Setup Pro reached its end after so many years of respected and appreciated activity? By thanking “customers, partners and friends” with a last message written on the homepage, the project owners (Eric Windmeier and Michael “TeX HeX” T.) explained that the reason is the insolvency of the Windmeier UG company founded by Windmeier.
So the X-Setup Pro authors have interrupted the software development putting an end to a history lasted almost 10 years and more than 3 million downloads. And if the desirable release of the source code is improbable at this point, the developers have decided to give users a last gift by releasing a serial code (XSA092-11TA9R-8K12YT) valid to register the latest official version of the program, the 9.2.100 one, that can be downloaded in portable format too through the links available on the homepage.
