The promises of cloud-based services are becoming more and more extraordinary, unattainable and nonsensical, luckily computer news are still here to remind, essentially on a daily basis, that behind every Internet promise there is a Lovecraftian horror threatening privacy, computer functioning and even the features included in a luxury electric car.

Video games streaming, the new digital crap shat down from the cloud

Entrusting data to cloud computing without a shellproof backup plan means to put our digital life in the hands and on the computers of someone else, and the big Internet corporations keep on planning new ways to get a profit out of it. The giants that built their empires by parasitizing users’ data are lately focused on what is the new hot trend in the cloud, ie video games streaming with access to the latest games from any display. Another deceptive promise doomed to fail in a spectacular way, especially when the leading actor of the new trend is a company known for the easiness it employs in getting rid of services and apps that aren’t part of its business plans any more.

Ninth generation consoles: the x86 clones war

We are still more than a year away from the debut of the already announced ninth generation consoles by Sony and Microsoft, hardware features of the future gaming machines are known as well as the purpose of the two corporations to follow the path already taken with the eighth generation and the adoption of the x86 processor architecture. The new Xbox and PlayStation consoles don’t seem to offer particularly interesting novelties from a hardware standpoint: on the contrary, the adoption of the same platform seems to level out a market once known for offering a remarkable variety of components and technologies.

The unusual temperatures of this autumnal Spring are finally about to make way for Summer heat, and likewise in the everlasting war of home consoles the eighth generation machines are about to retire in favor of a more advanced hardware. The ninth generation of gaming consoles has finally left the status of unofficial rumors thanks to the manufacturers direct involvement, and as usual one of the main fighting grounds will be how powerful the competing platforms are. Cloud computing-based streaming is more and more bully as well, even though the failures of the past (OnLive, may it rest in peace) don’t bode well in this regard.

Next-gen gaming consoles aren’t what they used to be

More than five years have passed since the debut of PlayStation 4, the machine that formally marked the beginning of technology and market competition between eighth generation consoles (without considering the miserable Wii U flop). These years have known wins and failures, surprising debuts and slow declines, gaming software with more and more advanced 3D graphics and immersive experiences offered to players. These years are now coming to an end, the ninth generation machines are getting ready to compete for enthusiasts’ homes. According to the latest months rumors, however, the upgrade to the gaming next-gen could become pretty messy. Consoles are multiplying, the PlayStations and the Xboxes and the Switches grows in numbers and the scenario for the upcoming future resembles a distressing vision – from the end user’s standpoint – rather than a welcomed renovation of dedicated gaming hardware.

The cloud idiots’ ludicrous tears

Those who entrust their digital life or business to the cloud computing servers without having an always ready backup plan are certified morons, and this is a fact that cannot be denied any more. The idiots of the cloud are the kind of users more prone to outages, problems and every sort of unreliability, hence the aforementioned idiots cry bitter tears more than anyone else when the servers go off-line, the company comes to a halt and documents are not accessible anymore because they are jailed in the unreachable cages of third-party platforms. But theirs are ludicrous tears, disgusting even for a crocodile: they knew what they were going to incur, so their issues don’t deserve sympathy but scorn. Morons must be treated as morons, until they won’t learn how to live in this world and to make a fucking off-line backup of everything.

Three generations of mobile phones compared

In the following photo you can see three different generations of mobile phones, smartphones or however you want to call them, three different technology worlds belonging to ages that seem much more far away than the years that actually elapsed. From left to right we have my old Nokia 3510, purchased in the first 2000s, an LG Optimus 7 (LG-E900) with Windows Phone 7.5 purchased on January 4, 2011 for an excessive amount of money (€ 359) and the newest Nokia 6.1 (Android 8), purchased on October for much less than the LG model (€ 219). The Android smartphone is still in the trial phase and seems to be really good for my needs, the Nokia 3510 aged incredibly well – with slightly worse performances for the battery compared to what I remembered – and the LG is finally dead as it cannot even go beyond the boot screen anymore.
