If I recall well, I chose the X9100 for the overclocking feats it has (unblocked multiplier).

The problem is: I'm still waiting for some decent update (or modification) for the crappy, crappy UEFI-BIOS my Acer Aspire has (ie I can't change a fucking thing right now not even set the hardware virtualization on!!!) to exploit it.

Hey there!

I read your article because I am in the same situation with the T6400 that I want to upgrade. I noticed you choose the X9100 CPU and that you are complaining about the noise and battery the new CPU takes, since it is 44W (45?). I just have a simple question:

Why did you not try the T9900? I boasts about the same price, has the same speed but is only 35W?
Perhaps I missed something? :)

Cheers!

i used the trial or free version of this for a short while around 2005, but it ended up being only a (good) learning tool. i haven't used it since.
now when i install, i run regshot during my tweaking. however, i don't trust registry changes to remain the same years later since by then windows has moved into a new SP.

old cdrom go flaky, because they're used hard.
meanwhile the fdd survives, because it gets used only to boot. when you've got an older pc (~2001) that doesn't have solid usb boot support in bios, the floppy works.
(though it's still easier to borrow a cdrom from a newer pc, and boot from cd)

ps/2 mouse & kybd don't need more speed. but hot plug (or kicked unplug) might be nice.
maybe if pcie costs too much to parts makers, they'll work out a cheaper way to plug into usb jacks on the mobos?

..
"default circuitry will deal with the latest peripherals and subsystems, while the custom components will continue to pump electric power into the aged PCI cards."
from performance POV, it makes sense to "demote" the slow stuff to "add on" circuitry.

Perhaps not enough people were buying the specs for PCIe? At only $3,500.00, I can't imagine why not!
http://www.pcisig.com/specifications/order_form

Really, though, this isn't as big of a deal as it seems; my reading of this is simply Intel looking to cut their development costs for the end of the market which likely would run screaming to their anti-virus to remove the nasty infection from their machine, were you to mention 'PCI' to them.

The gamer niche might actually benefit from this, and push it forward, since many are likely to being using all PCIe components already, anyway; consumer machines will be fast and crash a lot, and servers will be slower, but use good old reliable PCI to trudge along. Such has it always been.

If my PDF copy of Upgrading and Repairing PCs is right (and it's almost always right :-P), in the image above there should be at least FOUR 64-bit, 33 MHz PCI slots :-P

I could take a photo of my Pentium 4-based system interiors, but I should recover the PC from my parents' messy garage first :-P
