AntiVir Personal is 10 years old and Avira gives its customers a gift
It’s celebration time for Avira, the German security company headquartered in the little town of Tettnang best known for its renowned antivirus software. AntiVir Personal, the free antivirus offered by Avira to its customers has recently marked its tenth anniversary, and to properly celebrate the occasion the company prepared a special offer for who decided to purchase one of its commercial products within the next few days.
The formula chosen by Avira for its antivirus birthday is 10-10-10: AntiVir Personal becomes 10 years old, and in the 10 days between September 16 and 26 the customers that will buy Avira AntiVir Premium, Avira Premium Security Suite or Avira AntiVir SmallBusiness Suite for Windows on the company’s digital store will get a 10 months gift on the yearly period usually covered by the commercial license, for a total amount of 22 months of protection against malware and computer threats.
“For ten years” technical editor Dirk Knop writes on the Avira corporate blog, “we added an additional security layer around companies by protecting the employees personal computers from malware infections for free“. AntiVir free version, Knop continues, “always offered the latest antivirus techniques available” together with the high detection rates constantly certified in independent tests and the heuristic protection against unknown threats.

Founded more than twenty years ago with the aim to serve companies and public bodies with protection software, Avira later extended its activities to domestic environment obtaining, with just AntiVir Personal, a remarkable success counting more than 100 million users and that brought to release new localized versions in Italian and French next to the English and German ones, with Spanish, Russian and Japanese versions coming within the end of the year.
AntiVir Personal tenth anniversary also marked the occasion for a sort of back-in-time travel in users’ antivirus habits at the time of the software original distribution. The Avira survey, performed on a sample of 5,543 international users through the www.free-av.com site, highlighted that in 1999 only a third of PC users had an antivirus installed while 12% hadn’t any protection at all.
