KarmaKula chapter 2: “The Frog in the Well”

April 11, 2009 · Filed Under Multimedia, News

News - A succession of fresh, quality news, from inside and outside of the WebAs previously scheduled, on Wednesday, April 8 the Ninjai Gang has released on-line the second chapter of KarmaKula, the live action series that made its debut at the end of March and that represents, after Ninjai, the last achievement of the Gang’s many creative energies. The book is more or less always the same, though this time it’s worth reporting a definitely different gore level compared to the first chapter and the introduction of new directing gimmicks for a series that takes more and more the shape of some kind of cold steel fantasy western.

The new clash described in The Frog in the Well is in fact all a succeeding of closeups and grim eyes crossing, things that fans of Sergio Leone and the memorable spaghetti westerns of the Sixties and the Seventies will surely appreciate. More than to Leone and A fistful of dollars one can actually think about Yojimbo from Akira Kurosawa, a work that incidently was the early inspiration of Leone.

Returning to KarmaKula, after direction the other great added value of The Frog in the Well is its soundtrack, and for who follows Ninjai and the Ninjai Gang since years this surely isn’t something new: the bloody adventures of the little but very skilled ninja have always been surrounded by a rotation of rhythmic compositions and others more relaxed and suggestive, a feature that in KarmaKula assumes an all new meaning thanks to the actors and to a surprising sense of rhythm for how the various scenes have been assembled together.

I have already talked about the protagonist’s cleverness before, his skill with the sword and acrobatic performances are reconfirmed by the new episode and are integrated by the as much remarkable performances of Satya Bellord, the beautiful and deadly opponent that Karma Kula must face in this occasion. Satya, a long time member of the Ninjai Gang, has a particularly suitable preparation considering that she was the “double” of Uma Thurman in Tarantino’s Kill Bill fighting scenes.

The fight between the hero and his opponent is enjoyable as much and even more than the previous episode, with the same stunning blows performing speed, the unusually long sequences before shot change (at least they are unusual for who is accustomed to be dazed by direction virtuosities at the edges of Parkinson disease that Hollywood uses in its bloated multi-million productions) and the overall likelihood of everything.

Enchanted landscapes, a pressing music, sword fighting as rarely seen, KarmaKula fully respects the reputation of Ninjai Gang and amuses more than one could ask for and it does so even free! In the newsletter sent for the Frog in the Well release, the Gang says that the reaction to the first episode “was great“, announcing furthermore the availability of the aforementioned episode also on YouTube. The release date for the third chapter of KarmaKula is scheduled for the next 8th of May.
